As my grandmother grew older, she had
to leave her home and move into an assisted living facility.
With the passage of time her memory faded, but we found that
pictures and home movies would spark a remembrance and bring
a smile to her face. After finding some old 8mm home movies,
I had them transferred to DVD. I gave them to her and she
would she watch them over and over. Photographs would also
spark memories. We always kept family photos on her windowsill
to remind her of the faces that loved her.
She had a beautiful home and she missed
it terribly. Every room was full of wonderful antiques. All
the tabletops were filled with photos and mementos. Everything
had a story and there were dozens of stories inside every
room.
One of my saddest memories is the day we
had to sell her home and it’s contents. All of the icons
of my childhood with my grandmother were strewn across flatbed
trucks. Eager bidders were rummaging through them, breaking
some items, while setting others aside to purchase.
Deep inside, I knew these items were only
“things”, but it still hurt. I wanted her home
to remain exactly as it was...but that’s not reality.
Her house and all her possessions were sold.
I came away realizing, no matter how hard
we try, time moves on and our memories fade. I don’t
live in the past, but I enjoy looking back and remembering
the wonderful path I’ve traveled. I’m a visual
person and photographs remind me of that journey. If I had
taken quality photographs of my grandmother’s home I
would treasure them today.
I began to imagine a high quality“coffee
table book” filled with professional photographs of
family homes. That is why I started photographing homes, not
to record the events inside them, but to actually honor the
homes and the keepsakes that reside there.
If you have a home that you love, preserve
it forever in a beautiful, hardbound book. Don’t let
the memories slip away. You and your loved ones will treasure
a book like this for years.
Every home has a story. What’s the
story of your home?
